The Gypsy Caravan that is SnakeoilMagick has parked in the wide open prairie of  DirtyDallas, TX.  So many wondrous happenings in the works... NY Eye&Ear was a blast and many thanks to all of you who supported the Snake Oil booth//totem pole.  I am now teaching a variety of classes for makers of awesome stuff in Big D.  This weekend was a felted moccasin class***

New Snake Oil medicine bags featuring artwork by Owleyes & embellished with gorgeous glass eyeballs!   

Each bag contains a cork stopped glass vial filled with one surprise Owleyes print. Image is 3.5"x3.5", printed on translucent vellum, and can unroll to hang from alpaca thread.

This bag was made especially for Owleyes: It is made with amazingly soft grey cow fur, reverse side is supple bright purple suede, stitching is 100% alpaca wool thread, hand painted glass "lynx" eye set in puff paint of shiny black, neon yellow, glitter silver & glitter purple.

(I've been filling this one with special stones and sporting it around town for the past week...feels so good to wear! Love you Owleyes!)

Space-ship silver suede (so pretty...kind of a muted metallic), turquoise wool stitching, reverse side is royal blue suede, large baby blue cat eye set in glittery-neon-jeweled-puff paint, hangs from metallic gold suede cord.

Royal Red Eye: Butter soft metallic gold leather (both sides), stitched with charcoal alpaca wool thread, blood red glass eye set in glitter silver puff paint, soft silver metallic leather cord with gold leather braided detailing at neck. Hangs short, right at the heart chakra.

Fake Snake+Hot Pink wool stitching+Glass "lynx" eye!!! Glitter purple, neon pink, glow n' the dark puff paint. Reverse side is turquoise leather, hangs from plum leather cord.

Pendu Tarot Bag

This bag is larger than the wearable medicine bags, and was made especially for Todd Pendu's Tarot deck.  His cards will have a sacred space in this pouch marked with the inverted symbol of sulphur, and graced with owl wing feathers.  Todd is currently creating his own Magikians Divinatory Tarot deck in collaboration with artist Jesse Galaznik....a truly important endeavor.

WIGWAM is part of the Better Block Project and the Oak Cliff Art Crawl...

The Better Block Project:

For two days only, neighborhood activists are exploring that  concept by creating pop-up shops—a plant/gift shop, a coffee shop, kids  art studio—in an experiment that’s part art installation, part political  statement. This pre-war block with restrictive retail zoning and high  car traffic is converting to a people-friendly environment by adding  businesses most requested by locals and by reclaiming street space with  outdoor seating, historic lighting, and more. Both new and existing  businesses are celebrating this prospect with unique happenings at each  location. The project is part of the greater Oak Cliff Art Crawl, which  is being held on April 10th and 11th, 2010, and organized by Go Oak  Cliff, a non-profit working to improve quality of life in North Oak  Cliff.

Trash Totems

We are the Earth; sacred and profane. We are material and the things we make are made of the same elements that make us. The constellation of forces that shape who we are also falls upon our creations, determining what form they take, what purpose they serve, who will love them, and who will throw them away. Will they live long or be consumed by loneliness?

In Trash Totems, the sacred becomes not a quality put on an object, nor a spell put on a person, but a special bond that exists between the two. This magick imbues an object with the divine, allowing it to channel the immaterial relationships that bind us to one another. These relationships become the things that Lizzy Wetzel is harnessing.

Wetzel’s practice is one of seeking out these sacred relationships and collecting the objects they are contained within. She speaks the language of the silent, showing us that these things will talk to those who listen. An orange peel, Joe Frank’s hair, a bone fragment - they all become her primary materials.

In these 13 sculptures, she combines these materials through an intricate alchemy to build new relationships from her old ones. Each element added creates a new facet. What was a love for only two becomes a triangle, then a hexagon, an octagon, and eventually, by including us all, becomes a circle. They are totems; monuments celebrating the life we have had together.

Gravity pulls the Earth's weight into itself, compressing all of its material into stone and flesh. Like the pressure upon an igneous rock, these forces push on us along with our refuse. We are of this earth! As we bury ourselves amongst our things, we rejoice in marvel, consumed by the world and transformed by its gravity.
